You know, living here in Mead, we’re right in that sweet spot where the Front Range weather really cuts its teeth. The geography is the main culprit—we sit just far enough east of the Continental Divide that the prevailing winds get squeezed and sped up as they tumble down the mountains, and then they slam into our open prairie with nothing to slow them down. That’s why our hail season, which really ramps up from late spring through early fall, brings those fast-moving supercells that can drop golf-ball-sized stones one minute and then whip up straight-line winds of 70 or 80 miles an hour the next. It’s not like a coastal storm that lingers; these are violent, short bursts that hit one neighborhood hard and leave the next one untouched, but when they do hit, they’re just pounding on your roof like a drum.

The other thing folks don’t always realize is how our specific location makes the damage worse than it looks at first. Because we’re surrounded by open fields and farmland, there’s no tree line or hills to break up that wind, so it hits your shingles at full force, lifting the edges and loosening the sealant. Then, when the hail comes in sideways—which it almost always does here—it’s not just falling straight down; it’s being driven into the roof at an angle, which bruises the matting and knocks the granules off way faster than a straight drop would. And since our storm season can stretch from May all the way into October, we get multiple chances for a second storm to hit a roof that’s already weakened from the first one. I’ve seen it a hundred times—a roof that looked fine after a spring hailstorm suddenly starts leaking in the fall because the next windstorm peeled back those damaged shingles. It’s just the nature of living out here on the prairie.
