You know, living here in Crowley, we’re smack in the middle of that corridor where the Arkansas River valley meets the high plains, and that geography is a double-edged sword. When those spring storms roll in from the Rockies, they don’t just brush past us—they get funneled right down the valley, and the open, flat land gives the wind absolutely nothing to slow it down. I’ve seen straight-line winds rip through here that feel like a freight train, and when that happens, it’s not just about a few loose shingles. The wind gets underneath the edges of your roofing and literally peels it back like a sardine can, and once that seal is broken, the next rainstorm is going to find its way right into your attic.

And then there’s the hail, which is the real nightmare for us. We get these supercell storms that pop up seemingly out of nowhere in late May and June, and because we’re so far east of the mountains, those hailstones have had time to get bounced around in the updrafts and grow into these big, jagged chunks of ice. It’s not the little pea-sized stuff you see in other places; we’re talking golf ball and even baseball-sized rocks coming down at a steep angle, driven by that same relentless wind. That combination is brutal on your roof because the impact is so forceful it knocks the granules right off the shingles, and then the wind scours the exposed mat. Before you know it, your roof looks fine from the street, but it’s sunburned and brittle, and it’s only a matter of time before it starts cracking and leaking. I tell folks all the time, if you’ve lived here for more than a couple of seasons, your roof has already taken a beating—you just might not see it yet.
