Forensic Meteorological Assessment: Chapel Hill
Look, I’ve been replacing roofs in this part of Middle Tennessee for over twenty years, and I can tell you Chapel Hill gets hit harder than folks realize. We sit right in that corridor where warm, humid air from the Gulf slams into cooler air coming off the Highland Rim, and that collision is a recipe for trouble. The problem is, our homes are often tucked into these rolling hills and tree lines, which can actually funnel the wind into narrow channels, making it worse right over your ridge line.
What really gets me is how the local geography plays tricks on you. We’re not in wide-open flatland, so a storm can look like it’s passing to the north, but then the wind shifts and wraps around the knobs and hollows, hitting your roof from an angle it wasn’t designed for. That’s why I see so many homes with missing shingles on just one slope, or hail damage that’s concentrated on the west-facing side—it’s not random. Plus, our clay soil and the way the ground heats up unevenly in the summer creates those pop-up thunderstorms that can drop marble-sized hail out of a blue sky in July, with no warning. So when you add that to the fact that many of these homes have architectural shingles that are already baked by our hot, humid summers, the granule loss and cracking just make them that much more vulnerable when the next big blow comes through. It’s not a matter of if, but when, and I’d rather you know what we’re up against than get caught off guard.
