Look, I’ve been replacing roofs down here for over twenty years, and if there’s one thing I tell every homeowner in Sumatra, it’s that our location is a double-edged sword. We’re tucked right along the coast, which means we get the tail-end of those Gulf storms that spin up out of nowhere, especially from late spring through early fall. The warm, shallow water of the Gulf acts like a battery for thunderstorms, and when those cells roll over the flat, open marshland around us, there’s absolutely nothing to break up the wind. That flat terrain means a 60-mile-an-hour gust can stay at full strength all the way to your ridge line, and when it meets the sudden change in elevation of your roof, it creates that lifting pressure that just peels shingles right off.

And hail is the sneaky one. We don’t get the giant, baseball-sized stones like they do up in the Plains, but that’s almost worse. Our hail is usually smaller, maybe pea to golf ball size, but it comes down sideways with that coastal wind behind it. It’s not the size that kills your roof, it’s the angle and the velocity. Those little ice pellets hit your shingles like a sandblaster, knocking the granules loose and bruising the asphalt underneath. You won’t see the damage from the ground, but a year later, that same roof is baking in the Florida sun, and those bruised spots start cracking and curling. By the time a hurricane or a strong summer squall comes through, the shingles are already weak, and that’s when the wind just tears them off in big, ugly patches. It’s a one-two punch that’s unique to our little corner of the coast.
