Look, I’ve been roofing here for over twenty years, and I can tell you that Millen gets hit from a perfect storm of bad luck, geographically speaking. We sit right in that corridor where warm, muggy air from the Gulf slides up and collides with cooler fronts rolling down from the Plains. That’s a recipe for those violent, spinning supercell thunderstorms that seem to pop up out of nowhere, especially in the spring and again in late fall. And unlike some towns that have hills or tree lines to break the wind, we’re surrounded by flat, open farmland. That means a straight-line wind gust can barrel across those fields for miles without losing an ounce of its power, hitting your roof like a freight train with nothing to slow it down.

The hail is the sneaky culprit, though. We don’t get the giant grapefruit-sized stones you see on the news from Texas, but we get an endless supply of that nasty, quarter-to-golf-ball sized hail that comes down sideways with the wind. That size is the worst for shingles because it hits with enough force to bruise the matting and knock the granules clean off, but it’s not big enough to make you run for cover. So you end up with a roof that looks fine from the street, but the asphalt is sunbaked and brittle by July, and then that next storm just peels it right off. I’ve lost count of the roofs I’ve replaced in the neighborhoods off of Hwy 25 that looked perfect until the next big blow, and then suddenly they’re leaking in three rooms. It’s just the nature of living in this little pocket of Georgia.
