Look, I’ve been replacing roofs in Ellis County for over fifteen years, and I can tell you straight up—Waxahachie sits right in the bullseye for some of the nastiest spring weather in North Texas. We’re smack in the middle of what meteorologists call “Hail Alley,” but it’s not just the frequency, it’s the way the storms roll in off the Gulf. That warm, moist air from the south collides with the dry, cooler air coming down from the Panhandle right over our heads, and that clash creates these supercell thunderstorms that just park over the I-35 corridor. And because we’re on the eastern edge of the Balcones Escarpment—that subtle rise in the terrain that runs through the Hill Country—the storms get a little extra lift right as they hit us, which makes the hail bigger and the winds more violent than what you’d see twenty miles in either direction.

The real kicker is the timing and the wind direction. Our worst months are April through June, but we also get a nasty secondary spike in October and November. Those spring storms, they’ll come in from the southwest at 40 miles an hour, and the hail doesn’t just fall straight down—it gets driven sideways into your roof at an angle. That means the shingles on the west and south slopes take a beating, and the wind can easily hit 70 or 80 miles per hour in a straight-line gust, which is enough to lift the edges of your shingles and let the rain and hail get underneath. Once that happens, the adhesive strip fails, and you get those little divots and granule loss that you can’t see from the ground. And because we get these storms in clusters—sometimes three or four in a single week—a roof that’s already weakened by one hit is just sitting there waiting for the next one to finish the job. It’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when, and I’ve seen brand new roofs get shredded in a single May afternoon.
