When a supercell builds up west of us over the Edwards Plateau, it’ll come barreling down the drainage, and the topography just squeezes the wind, making it whip around the ridges and slam into rooftops from angles you’d never expect. It’s not just the straight-line gusts, either—those hailstones get caught in the updrafts and get tossed around like marbles in a blender before they come down, so we see a lot of quarter-to-baseball-sized ice that hits with real velocity, not just falling straight down.

And the timing is the real kicker. Our severe season runs from late March through June, but we get a second nasty round in October when the first cold fronts clash with lingering Gulf moisture. That’s when we’ll get three or four big hailers in a single month, sometimes back-to-back weekends. The older homes here, especially the ones with that classic 3-tab asphalt shingle, they take a beating because the wind lifts the edges and the hail bruises the mat, and before you know it, you’ve got granule loss and exposed fiberglass. I’ve seen brand-new architectural shingles get shredded in one storm if the wind hits just right off that west-facing slope.
