Supply Forensic Weather & Hail Impact Report

Look, I’ve been replacing roofs up and down the Cape Fear coast for over twenty years, and I can tell you Supply is in a unique bullseye. We sit right in that sweet spot where the warm Gulf Stream air collides with cooler continental fronts coming off the mainland, especially from March through June. That’s when those pop-up supercell thunderstorms get their teeth, and they don’t just rain—they drop hail the size of golf balls and straight-line winds that’ll peel shingles like an onion. The geography doesn’t help, either. We’re flat as a pancake here, with all that open farmland and marshland between us and the ocean, so there’s nothing to break up the wind. A gust can roll in off the Intracoastal Waterway and just scream across your roof with zero resistance, lifting edges and tearing off flashing before you even hear the thunder.

And don’t forget hurricane season, which is really the big one for us from August through October. We’re far enough inland that we don’t always get the full eyewall, but we get the outer bands, and those are sneaky. They spin off these little embedded tornadoes and microbursts that hit one street hard and leave the next one untouched. I’ve seen homes on the same block where one house looks like a bomb went off and the neighbor’s got a few missing shingles. The hail in those bands is often smaller, but it’s wind-driven, so it hits at an angle and gets under the granules, aging a 10-year-old roof like it’s 20. Plus, with all the pine trees and oak limbs we’ve got around here, a 50-mile-per-hour gust turns a dead branch into a battering ram. So when you ask why Supply is high risk, it’s not just one storm—it’s the constant, seasonal beating from both spring thunderstorms and fall hurricanes, all on a flat, exposed landscape that gives the weather a clear shot at your ridge line.
