Look, I’ve been replacing roofs in this part of West Texas for over twenty years, and if there’s one thing I can tell you, it’s that Stamford sits right in the bullseye of some of the nastiest weather on the plains. That combination is what really tears up a roof—the impact bruises the shingles, and then the wind peels back the edges, lifting them like playing cards until the water gets underneath.
And it’s not just the big spring storms you have to worry about. Our geography plays a sneaky trick on us, too. Because we’re surrounded by miles of open farmland with no hills or tree lines to break up the wind, those gust fronts that precede a storm can hit 70 or 80 miles an hour without even trying. I’ve seen a perfectly good roof that survived a hailstorm in May get completely shredded in June by a “dry microburst” that came out of nowhere—no rain, just a wall of wind that ripped shingles clean off the deck. The heat doesn’t help either. By August, those asphalt shingles are baking in 105-degree sun, getting brittle and losing their seal. So when that first cold front rolls through in October and brings a thunderstorm with it, the shingles are already weak. It’s a one-two punch: the summer heat preps the roof for failure, and then our storm season delivers the knockout blow.
