Look, I’ve been replacing roofs up and down the Albemarle region for over twenty years, and I can tell you Severn gets hit with a perfect storm of conditions that just beat the tar out of a roof. We sit right in that corridor where cold fronts rolling down from the mountains slam into the warm, moist air coming off the sound and the Atlantic. That clash doesn’t just give us a little afternoon shower—it brews up those violent, spinning thunderstorms that seem to pop out of nowhere, especially in the late spring and early summer. And because we’re so flat and open, with all those farm fields and the wide Chowan River nearby, there’s nothing to break up the wind. A straight-line gust can come screaming across those fields at sixty or seventy miles an hour, and it hits your shingles like a sandblaster, lifting edges and peeling them back before the rain even starts.

Then you’ve got the hail, and that’s the sneaky one. We don’t get the giant baseball-sized stones like they do out in the Plains, but we get these dense, marble-to-golf-ball sized pellets that come down sideways in those same storms. Because the wind is so strong, the hail isn’t falling straight—it’s being driven into your roof at an angle, which means it’s hammering the exposed nail heads and the granule layer on the south and west-facing slopes the hardest. Over the course of a typical summer, we’ll get three or four of these events, and each one takes a little more life out of the asphalt. By the time fall rolls around and we get those nor’easters pushing in from the northeast, a roof that looked fine in June can suddenly have bare spots, cracked shingles, and lifted tabs that are just begging to be ripped off. It’s not one big storm that does you in—it’s the constant, relentless combination of that flatland wind and that angled hail, season after season.
