Look, I’ve been putting roofs on homes up here for over twenty years, and I can tell you Scaly Mountain gets hit harder than folks realize. We sit right in that pocket where the Blue Ridge and the Smokies kind of pinch together, and that’s exactly what the weather loves to use as a funnel. When those spring and summer thunderstorms roll in off the Tennessee line, they’ll build up fast, and the topography just squeezes the wind right down through the gaps. I’ve seen straight-line winds come off that ridge that’ll peel shingles like a banana, and the hail—well, it’s not those little pea-sized pebbles you get down in Franklin. Up here, the updrafts are so strong that the stones get bounced around in the clouds for a while, so by the time they drop, they’re the size of golf balls or bigger, and they’re coming in sideways.

And it’s not just the summer storms, either. We get those nasty cold fronts in late fall and early winter that’ll stall right over the mountain, and that’s when you get that freezing rain and sleet that’s almost worse than hail. The wind will drive that ice under the edges of your shingles, and then when it thaws and refreezes, it lifts them up just enough for the next big gust to tear them clean off. Plus, because we’re so high up—over 3,000 feet in spots—the wind doesn’t have any trees or hills to break it up like it does down in the valley. It just hits your roof flat and hard. I’ve replaced more roofs on the west-facing slopes of this mountain than anywhere else in the county, and it’s always the same story: hail dings that compromise the matting, then a windstorm comes along and finishes the job. You really have to use impact-rated shingles up here, or you’re just throwing money away every couple of years.
