Look, I’ve been replacing roofs in the Triangle for over fifteen years, and if there’s one thing I tell every homeowner at their kitchen table, it’s that Raleigh sits right in Mother Nature’s crosshairs when it comes to hail. When those storms fire up, they don’t just give us a little rain; they drop marble-sized and even golf-ball-sized hail that slams into your shingles at a steep angle, bruising the asphalt and knocking the protective granules right off. Once those granules are gone, your roof is basically sunbathing naked, and the next time the sun beats down, it’s baking the matting and making it brittle.
And it’s not just the hail—the wind that comes with these storms is a sneaky killer. We get those straight-line wind events, sometimes with gusts hitting 60 to 70 miles per hour, that rip shingles up from the edges and peel them back like a sardine can. The problem is that our typical summer storm season, especially from May through August, brings these intense downbursts where the rain is so heavy it acts like a waterfall, and the wind gets funneled right between the trees and the neighborhoods. I’ve seen roofs that looked fine from the street, but up close, the wind had lifted the tabs just enough to let water wick up under them, and then the next hailstorm finished the job. It’s a one-two punch that’s unique to this area, and it’s why I always tell folks not to wait until they see a leak—by then, the structural damage is already done.
