Pandora Forensic Weather & Hail Impact Report

Look, I’ve been roofing here for over twenty years, and I can tell you straight up—Pandora sits right in the bullseye of some of the nastiest weather in the Hill Country. We’re not just dealing with a random thunderstorm here and there. Our spring and early summer storm season rolls in off the Edwards Plateau, and those supercell systems love to spin up right over this flat, open land. There’s nothing to break up the wind, so when a front collides with that humid Gulf air, you get straight-line winds that can hit 70 or 80 miles an hour, and hail the size of golf balls isn’t uncommon. I’ve pulled shingles off roofs that looked like someone took a shotgun to them, and the worst part is, it happens fast—one minute it’s calm, the next you’ve got hail pounding your attic like a drum solo.

The geography is a big part of the problem, too. We’re in a kind of natural funnel between the low hills to the west and the open prairie to the east, and that just squeezes the wind and makes it gust harder right over the rooftops. Plus, a lot of the homes out here were built with standard 3-tab shingles that just aren’t rated for that kind of impact. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a roof that looked fine from the street, but up close, the hail has bruised the shingles so bad they’re about to crumble. And when the wind gets under a lifted edge, it’s like a sail—it peels whole sections off in one clean sheet. So when you hear the hail warning on your phone, don’t just think about your car. That roof over your head is taking a beating, and if you wait until the next storm to check it, you might be looking at water stains on your ceiling before you even get a ladder out.
