Osprey Forensic Weather & Hail Impact Report

Look, I’ve been replacing roofs down here for over twenty years, and if there’s one thing I tell every homeowner in Osprey, it’s that you’re living in a bullseye for two specific kinds of trouble: hail and straight-line wind. It’s not just about the big hurricanes, either. Our real problem is those violent, pop-up thunderstorms that roll in off the Gulf from May through September. The geography here is a big part of it—we’ve got that warm, shallow water in the bay and the flat, open terrain, so when a storm cell builds up, there’s nothing to break it up. You get these intense downdrafts, what we call microbursts, that can hit 70 or 80 miles an hour out of nowhere. That wind gets under the edge of your shingles and just peels them back like a sardine can, and once that happens, the next rain is coming straight into your attic.

And then there’s the hail, which a lot of folks don’t expect this far south. But we get it, usually in the spring and early summer when the jet stream dips down and collides with that humid Gulf air. The hail here isn’t always huge, but it’s dense and comes down at an angle with that wind, so it acts like a sandblaster on your roof. It knocks the granules right off the asphalt, and once those granules are gone, your shingles are basically naked to the Florida sun. That’s when you get that brittle, cracked surface that fails a few years down the road, long after the storm is a memory. I can’t tell you how many roofs I’ve seen that looked fine from the street but were completely compromised up close, just because of one bad hailstorm that didn’t even make the news. It’s a sneaky, slow burn, and that’s why I always tell my Osprey customers to get a professional inspection after any severe thunderstorm watch, not just the big named hurricanes.
