Look, I know it might seem strange to think about hail damage when you’re picturing palm trees and sunshine, but Central Florida sits right in the bullseye for some of the most violent thunderstorm activity in the country. We’re not talking about the quick afternoon showers you see in the summer; I mean the massive, towering supercells that build up over the Gulf and roll straight across I-4. Those storms have a nasty habit of dropping hail the size of golf balls, and because our humidity is so thick, the wind gets squeezed into tight, powerful gusts that can easily peel back shingles or send a tree branch through your roof like it’s nothing. The real kicker is that our homes are built with that classic Florida hip roof design, which looks great but has a lot of exposed edges and valleys that take the brunt of that wind, making them far more vulnerable than a simple gable roof up north.
And it’s not just a one-off event—we get hit from two different directions depending on the season. In the spring, we get those violent squall lines that race across the state, often with straight-line winds that can hit 70 or 80 miles per hour, which is basically a weak tornado but over a huge area. Then, from June through November, we’re watching the tropics, and even a passing tropical storm that’s a hundred miles offshore can send spiral rain bands with embedded microbursts right over our neighborhoods. The heat and moisture create that unstable atmosphere, so the hail forms quickly and falls hard, and the wind follows right behind it. I’ve seen roofs that looked fine after a storm, but the hail had knocked the granules off the shingles, and then the next windy day just shredded them. It’s a one-two punch that’s unique to our geography, and it’s why I always tell folks to get their roofs inspected after any big thunderstorm, not just the hurricanes.
