Look, I’ve been replacing roofs in this county for over twenty years, and I can tell you that New Ulm sits right in the bullseye for some of the nastiest weather in Texas. We’re smack in the middle of that corridor where warm, wet air from the Gulf slams into cool, dry fronts rolling down from the Panhandle. That collision doesn’t just give us a little rain—it stacks up supercell thunderstorms that love to drop hail the size of golf balls, sometimes even baseballs, right on our heads. The geography doesn’t help either. We’re surrounded by open farmland and those gentle rolling hills, so there’s nothing to break up the wind. A storm can come screaming across those fields at 60 or 70 miles an hour, and by the time it hits your roof, it’s carrying enough force to peel shingles right off the deck like they’re nothing.

And it’s not just a one-off thing. Our severe weather season runs a long, ugly gauntlet from March all the way through June, and then we get a second nasty round in the fall. That’s when the jet stream dips down and starts throwing these violent systems at us week after week. I’ve seen homes here take three or four major hits in a single spring. The problem is, a lot of folks think a little hail is just cosmetic, but those impacts crack the asphalt and loosen the granules, and then the wind gets underneath and starts lifting. Before you know it, you’ve got a roof that’s leaking in places you can’t even see from the ground. Trust me, if you’ve been here more than a couple of years, your roof has already taken a beating—it’s just a matter of when it’s going to give out, not if.
