Mingus Forensic Weather & Hail Impact Report

Look, I’ve been roofing here for over twenty years, and I can tell you straight up—Mingus sits right in the path of some of the nastiest spring storms in Texas. We’re tucked into that rolling hill country where the Palo Pinto and Brazos River valleys meet, and that geography acts like a funnel for supercell thunderstorms that build up to the west. When those storms roll in off the plains, they don’t just pass over—they stall and spin, dropping hail the size of golf balls or bigger, and the wind comes in straight-line gusts that can hit 70 or 80 miles an hour. It’s not a once-in-a-while thing either; every April and May, we get three or four of these hailers, and I’ve seen roofs that looked fine in March turned to Swiss cheese by June.

What makes it worse is the way our homes are built and where they sit. A lot of the older houses here have those steep-pitched metal or composite shingle roofs that catch the wind like a sail, and the newer ones with flat architectural shingles just don’t have the nail pattern to hold up against that kind of uplift. Plus, we’re surrounded by open pasture and scattered mesquite, so there’s nothing to break the wind before it hits your ridge line. I’ve walked properties where the hail dented the gutters, cracked the skylights, and stripped the granules off the shingles so bad that the next hot summer sun baked the mat brittle.
