Knightdale Forensic Weather & Hail Impact Report

Look, I’ve been replacing roofs in this part of Wake County for over fifteen years, and I can tell you Knightdale gets hit harder than folks realize. We sit right in that corridor where the Piedmont starts rolling into the coastal plain, and that transition zone acts like a funnel for spring thunderstorms. When those cold fronts come barreling down from the mountains in March and April, they slam into our warm, humid air and explode right over 64 and 264. I’ve seen hail the size of golf balls bounce off driveways on Hodge Road like it was nothing, and that’s not an exaggeration—that’s just a typical Tuesday in May for us.

The wind is the sneaky part, though. We don’t get the big coastal hurricanes that tear up Wilmington, but we get the remnants, and those systems spin up these tight, nasty little cells that drop straight-line winds at 70, 80 miles an hour. Plus, our neighborhoods are full of mature oaks and pines, and when those winds hit the treeline, they create this turbulence that literally peels shingles right off the deck. I’ve climbed up on roofs off of Smithfield Road where the wind lifted the edges so violently it pulled the nails clean out of the plywood. So between the hail battering the granules and the wind grabbing those exposed edges, a Knightdale roof takes a double punch almost every single storm season—and that’s why I’m always telling folks to get a thorough inspection after the first big blow in June.
