Look, I’ve been replacing roofs out here for over fifteen years, and Kirkland sits right in that nasty little corridor where the weather just seems to line up against you. We’re smack in the middle of the Texas Panhandle plains, which means there’s nothing but flat, open ranchland for a hundred miles in every direction to get in the way of a storm. When those spring supercells start rolling in off the Caprock—usually right around late March through June—they’ve got all that warm, moist air from the Gulf slamming into dry, fast-moving air from the Rockies. That’s the exact recipe for hail, and I’m not talking about pea-sized stuff. We routinely see golf ball to baseball-sized stones up here, and when they’re falling at a hundred miles an hour, they don’t just ding your shingles—they punch clean through the matting and leave your decking exposed.

And the wind is the sneaky part that folks don’t think about until it’s too late. Kirkland’s got that high, flat elevation, so there’s no tree line or hills to break up the gusts. When a thunderstorm’s leading edge hits us, we get these straight-line winds that can easily top 70 or 80 miles an hour, and they’ll peel shingles right off the nail line like they’re nothing. Then you add in the fact that we’re also prone to those sudden, violent downbursts in the middle of summer—the ones that come out of nowhere in July and August—and your roof is taking a beating from two different directions all year long. The hail weakens the granules and cracks the fiberglass, and then the wind gets underneath those damaged edges and lifts them up. Before you know it, a small leak turns into a full replacement because the whole system got compromised in one bad storm season. That’s just the reality of living out here on the flats.
