And it’s not just spring, either. We get a second nasty window in the fall, usually September and October, when those same warm and cool air masses start tangling again. That’s when you’ll get those slow-moving, training thunderstorms that sit over us for an hour, dumping hail in waves and swirling the wind around like a blender. The problem is, a lot of homes in Kilgore were built with standard 3-tab shingles or older architectural ones that just aren’t rated for that kind of repeated impact. Once hail dings the surface, it compromises the granule layer, and then the next windstorm lifts those weakened tabs right up. I’ve walked roofs where the damage wasn’t even visible from the ground—just little bruises and cracks—but you get up there and the whole deck is compromised.
