A marble-sized hailstone at 60 miles an hour will just shatter those old, sun-baked shingles instead of bouncing off like it would on a newer roof. And the wind—we get those straight-line gusts that can hit 70 or 80 miles an hour during a dry line passage—will peel up the edges of a compromised shingle and then the next rainstorm gets underneath and lifts the whole mat. It’s a one-two punch: the sun weakens everything, then the spring storms finish the job. If you’ve got a roof that’s more than ten years old, you’re basically driving a car with bald tires in a rainstorm—it’s not a matter of if, but when.
