Look, I’ve been replacing roofs in this part of Gadsden County for over twenty years, and if there’s one thing I can tell you about Havana, it’s that we get hammered from two directions. You’ve got the Gulf of Mexico brewing up those classic spring and summer thunderstorms that roll in from the southwest, and then you’ve got the cold fronts that drop down from the Tennessee Valley in the late fall and winter. When those two systems collide right over the red hills and the rolling farmland around us, the atmosphere just stacks up. The warm, humid air gets shoved up by the cooler air so fast that it creates these towering, angry clouds that can drop golf-ball-sized hail without much warning. And because our town sits in that little bowl of low hills, the storms tend to stall and spin right on top of us, giving the hail more time to pound your shingles instead of just passing through in ten minutes.

The wind is the sneaky part, though. People think they’re safe because we’re not on the coast, but those same thunderstorms that bring the hail also produce straight-line winds that come screaming down off the higher ground to the north. I’ve seen gusts hit sixty or seventy miles an hour in a heartbeat, and when that wind gets funneled through the gaps between the oak trees and the older neighborhoods, it acts like a wind tunnel. That’s when you get shingles lifted at the corners, and once the edge is up, the next storm’s rain gets under it and starts rotting the decking. Plus, we get those occasional late-summer tropical remnants that push all the way up from the Big Bend, and by the time they reach us, they’re full of moisture and spinning with enough energy to tear off flashing and gutters. It’s not a matter of if you’ll get hit, it’s a matter of when, and the older homes with their steep pitches and architectural shingles are the ones that take the brunt of it.
