Look, I’ve been roofing here for over twenty years, and I can tell you that Grandy gets hit from two directions that most folks don’t think about. We’re sitting right there on the northern edge of the Albemarle Sound, which means we’re the first thing those nor’easters slam into when they roll down from the Chesapeake. Those storms don’t just bring rain—they spin up straight-line winds that can hit sixty or seventy miles an hour, and they’ll peel shingles right off a roof like they’re nothing. But the real kicker is the hail. We’re in that weird corridor where warm Gulf air collides with cold fronts coming off the mountains, and that’s a recipe for those pop-up supercells in late spring and early summer. I’ve seen hailstones the size of golf balls out here that punch right through asphalt, and if your roof is older than ten years, it’s basically a target.

What makes it worse is the geography itself. We’ve got all that open farmland and marshland to the west and north, so there’s nothing to break up the wind before it hits your ridge line. A house in a wooded neighborhood in Elizabeth City might get some shelter, but out here, you’re exposed to the full fetch of the sound. And don’t forget hurricane season—September and October are the real danger months. Even if a storm makes landfall down near Wilmington, the outer bands spin up tornadoes and microbursts that come through here with zero warning. I’ve replaced roofs on houses that looked fine from the street, but the hail had fractured the fiberglass mat under the shingles, so the next good windstorm just ripped the whole top layer off.
