Look, I’ve been replacing roofs in this county for over twenty years, and I can tell you Fort Valley gets hit from a perfect storm of bad luck, geographically speaking. We sit right in that corridor where warm, moist air from the Gulf slides up and collides with cooler air rolling down from the mountains. That’s a recipe for those violent, spinning supercell thunderstorms that seem to pop up out of nowhere in the late afternoon, especially from March through June. And because we’re surrounded by flat, open farmland and pecan groves, there’s absolutely nothing to break up that wind. It comes screaming across those fields for miles without a hill or a tree line to slow it down, so when it hits your roof, it’s hitting it with the full, unadulterated force of the open plains.

The real kicker, though, is the hail that comes with those storms. It’s not just the size of the stones—though we do see golf-ball and even baseball-sized chunks more often than folks up north would believe—it’s the angle. That straight-line wind I just mentioned drives the hail sideways, so instead of just bouncing off the top of your shingles, it’s hammering them at an angle, prying up the edges and breaking the seal between the tabs. Once that seal is broken, the next big blow will just peel those shingles right off like a banana. And it doesn’t help that our summer heat makes the asphalt soft and pliable, so the hail embeds itself deeper and does more damage than it would in a cooler climate. You might not see a leak today, but I promise you, those little black dots and soft spots are ticking time bombs for the next big windstorm that rolls through Peach County.
