Look, I’ve been replacing roofs up here in Henderson County for over twenty years, and I can tell you Etowah gets hit harder than folks realize. We’re sitting right in that bowl between the Blue Ridge escarpment and the Pisgah ridges, and that geography acts like a funnel for spring and summer storms. When a cold front drops down from the mountains, it slams into that warm, humid air we get from the French Broad Valley, and the wind doesn’t just blow—it swirls and gusts sideways off the slopes. And the hail? That’s the sneaky one. We get our worst hailers in late April through June, when those slow-moving supercells stall right over the river gaps. Because of the elevation changes around here, the hail doesn’t fall straight down—it gets caught in those updrafts and tumbles around, so you end up with jagged, irregular stones instead of smooth ones. Those things hit your roof at an angle, bruising the asphalt and knocking the granules off, which is exactly what leads to those bald spots that leak five years down the road.
