Look, I’ve been replacing roofs in this part of Effingham County for over fifteen years, and I can tell you Ellabell gets hit harder than folks realize. We’re sitting right in that low, flat corridor between the Ogeechee and the Canoochee rivers, which means when a spring thunderstorm rolls off the coast, there’s nothing to break it up. Those big, slow-moving supercells love to stall right over us, and when they do, they drop hail the size of golf balls—sometimes bigger—straight onto those southern-exposure slopes. The heat and humidity off the marshlands in July and August just fuel these things, so you’ll get a clear, hot morning and by 4 PM, the sky’s green and the wind’s screaming from the southwest. That’s not a rare event; that’s a typical Tuesday in late spring.

What really gets you is the combination of that hail with the straight-line winds we see during hurricane season, even when the storm’s a hundred miles away. We’re far enough inland that we don’t get the full eyewall, but those outer bands come through with gusts that’ll rip shingles right off the deck, and once the granules are knocked loose by the hail, the wind just peels them like a banana. Plus, a lot of the homes out here were built in the late 90s and early 2000s with three-tab shingles that weren’t rated for this kind of abuse. I’ve walked roofs where the hail hit so hard it bruised the plywood underneath, and then the next storm finished the job. If you’re in a newer development near the interstate, you might be okay, but if you’re off the beaten path closer to the river bottoms, you’re basically a target.
