Look, I’ve been replacing roofs in this part of Southwest Georgia for over twenty years, and I can tell you Damascus doesn’t get lucky when it comes to weather. That big, heavy hail—often marble to ping-pong ball sized—hits the shingles and knocks the granules right off, leaving the mat exposed and brittle. Then the wind, which we get in straight-line bursts that can easily hit 70 or 80 miles an hour, gets under those damaged edges and starts peeling them back like a sardine can. And because our summers are so brutally hot and humid, that asphalt is already softened up, so it’s even more vulnerable. I’ve seen roofs that looked fine from the ground, but once I got up there, the hail had bruised the fiberglass mat so bad that a stiff breeze would have finished the job. It’s not a matter of *if* you’ll get hit—it’s a matter of *when*, and being ready for it is the only thing that saves you in the long run.
