Forensic Meteorological Assessment: Clifton

Look, I’ve been replacing roofs up and down the Bosque River valley for over twenty years, and if there’s one thing I can tell you about Clifton, it’s that we’re sitting right in the bullseye of what I call “hail alley.” You see, our little town is nestled in a natural dip where the rolling hills funnel those springtime supercells straight down the valley. When a big thunderstorm builds up over the Edwards Plateau and starts marching northeast, it hits that warmer, wetter air coming off the river and just explodes. We get these massive, slow-moving storms that stall right over us, dropping hail the size of golf balls for twenty minutes straight. It’s not like Dallas where the hail comes in sideways and bounces off; ours comes straight down, hammering the same spot over and over, and the older composition shingles up here just don’t stand a chance.

And it’s not just the hail—it’s the wind that comes with it. We get those nasty “straight-line” winds that blow in from the west, usually right around May and again in late October, and they’ll peel a shingle right off its tab like it’s nothing. The problem is our location on the edge of the Hill Country means we get that “canyon effect” where the wind squeezes between the low ridges and speeds up, easily hitting 70 or 80 miles an hour. I’ve seen storms where the hail didn’t even break the granules, but the wind lifted the edges of the shingles, and then the next rainstorm drove water right under them. So when you hear the sirens go off, just remember—your roof is taking the brunt of a double whammy that’s unique to this little pocket of Central Texas, and it’s why I’m always telling folks to check their gutters for those little black pebbles after a storm. That’s your first sign the hail got you.
