China Spring Forensic Weather & Hail Impact Report

Look, I’ve been replacing roofs out here for over fifteen years, and I can tell you without a doubt that China Spring gets hammered in a way that surprises folks who just moved in from out of state. We sit right in that corridor where the dry, hot air from the west collides with the moist Gulf breeze coming up from the coast, and that’s a recipe for some nasty supercell storms, especially in the spring and early summer. You’ll see the sky turn that sickly green color, and before you know it, we’re getting hail the size of golf balls, sometimes bigger, coming down sideways with sixty-mile-an-hour winds. It’s not just the size of the hail that tears up your shingles—it’s the wind that drives it into the roof at an angle, lifting the edges and prying up the granules like a crowbar.

What makes it worse here is the geography. We’re on that rolling prairie with a lot of open, exposed land, so there’s nothing to break up the wind’s momentum before it slams straight into your ridge line. And unlike some neighborhoods tucked into tree cover, a lot of the newer builds in China Spring are sitting on these wide, flat lots where the house takes the full brunt of every gust. Plus, our storm season isn’t a one-and-done deal—we get those pop-up thunderstorms in April and May, but we also get surprise hail events in September and even October when the temperatures start to swing. That means your roof takes a beating multiple times a year, and if you’ve got an older asphalt shingle that’s already brittle from the Texas sun, it doesn’t stand a chance. I’ve seen roofs that looked fine from the street, but once I got up there, the hail had turned the surface into something that felt like cracked peanut brittle.
