Catarina Forensic Weather & Hail Impact Report

Look, I’ve been replacing roofs out here for over twenty years, and I can tell you Catarina gets hit from two directions at once. We sit right in that corridor where the Gulf moisture comes rolling up from the south and slams into the dry desert air coming off the Chihuahuan Plateau. That collision is a recipe for supercell thunderstorms, and when they pop, they don’t mess around. The hail we get isn’t that little pea-sized stuff you see in other parts of Texas—it’s often golf ball to baseball sized, and it comes down sideways with wind gusts that can easily top 70 or 80 miles an hour. The flat, open ranch land around here gives that wind nothing to break it up, so it just barrels straight into your roofline like a freight train.

And the timing is the real kicker. Our worst months are usually April through June, but we also get a nasty second round in September and October when the tail end of hurricane season pushes those tropical systems up from the Gulf. That’s when you get the real sustained winds, not just the quick thunderstorm bursts. The heat we get in July and August doesn’t help either—it bakes the shingles until they’re brittle, so by the time that first big storm rolls in, the granules are already loose and the sealant is cracked. That means a hailstorm that might just dent a newer roof will tear the matting right off an older one. I’ve seen homes on the same street where one house gets a few scuffs and the neighbor’s roof looks like someone took a shotgun to it, and it almost always comes down to how the wind hit that particular ridge line and how worn down the shingles were before the storm ever showed up.
